One women loses her life in attempting to distribute Bibles, while the Metropoilitan Community Church has a display which offers an opportunity for people to "interact" with Scripture.

First, you have to like this: "North Korea claims to guarantee freedom of religion for its 24 million people." That reminds me of when, after I pointed out the massive violence against religion in the former USSR, bert would say "they had total freedom of religion, it was written into the soviet constitution," as if a piece of paper guaranteeing a freedom is anything like the state actually preserving that freedom. Anyway, in Touchstone Magazine (a "journal of Mere Christianity"), they have a monthly column called "The Suffering Church," and quite often the martyrs today are in Asia. People still suffer and die for the gospel. We too easily forget that.

What is especially stupid and delightful about the second item is this statement: “If you feel you have been excluded from the Bible, please write your way back into it.” I like that on so many levels, not the least of which is that though you (e.g., a proud bisexual, as in the story) were never in the Bible, you can get "back into it," as if you were once there and were cast out. But then so many people are not affirmed by the Bible: thieves, adulterers, murderers. It must pain them that they aren't celebrated by the Bible.

The real beauty, though, is that while the church that planned the exhibit didn't intend it this way, it speaks volumes about what their approach to the faith really is: If you don't like what you find in the Bible, write your own, deface the old one, and embrace self love, as that is what religion is all about--affirmation.
